What causes water to go in to the spark plug wells?

Have a 1993 cavalier and has been leaking major coolant and trying to narrow down where the leak is coming from. Went to change spark plugs and there is water in3 of the 4 cylinders. Filled radiator with water and it came leaking out 2nd cylinder. Does that mean cracked head?

Another possibility is that the gaskets on your intake manifold have failed. This is a very common problem on a lot of GM cars, especially engines that have a plastic intake manifold. I wouldn't jump the gun on a cracked head or block just yet. Go to a major auto parts supplier (like Auto Zone) and ask if your particular engine is known for bad intake gaskets or bad head gaskets. Replacing with Fel-pro gaskets is the best cure for this, if that is your real problem. Was your engine ever over-heated??? That would cause warpage of your cylinder head that requires extensive repairs. Also, if you haven't been using a specialty coolant in your engine designed for high aluminum and plastic content, your cylinder head and gasket could look like swiss cheese from acidic corrosion. Good Luck!!

Yup chances are it is a cracked cylinder head. Usually if the headgasket was leaking you would have a external leak, but it is a engine and sometimes strange things happen and it very well could be the headgasket.
Means its very likely that the head is cracked, but that's not where the coolant comes from. The head gasket leaks the fluid its that fluid hitting the head that cracks it. Only way to know for sure is take the head off and see.
Yep.

Either you blew a head gasket, cracked the head, or cracked the engine block.

The good news is that the value for scrap metal is pretty high right now. :)
Possibly - but more likely you just have a leaky hose or water pump, and the coolant is leaking down into the spark plug wells.

Check everything else while it is hot and see if you can tell where the coolant is leaking at.
could be a cracked head or blown gasket or both you will have to remove the cylinder head to inspect. if its
That or the head gasket.
