Is it going ot hurt to have a spark plug a lil bit longer than the stock one?

I havent changed my spark plugs for about 8 years now I went and bought 8 bosch spark plugs but heres the delima the stock spark plugs have a thread length of (just guessing) about 3/4 of an inch? and the new ones are about a inch and a 1/4? or a inch? its not a big difference but is this going to hurt to have longer threads than before?
Is it going ot hurt to have a spark plug a lil bit longer than the stock one?
Take the Bosch plugs back and get the OEM AC-Delco parts. Small block Chevrolet's do not have 3/4 threaded reach in the cylinder heads. You'll hammer the pistons. Go directly to the New AC-Delco Website and feed in your application for the proper spark plugs. You didn't say which year yours was.
Is it going ot hurt to have a spark plug a lil bit longer than the stock one?
DO NOT STICK THOSE PLUGS IN!!!!!!!!!!!

if there to long when the piston comes to the top it could hit the new plug and seriously damage the piston(and the plug)

its to easy to return the plugs and get the correct ones

and replacing pistons are not easy
not necessarily. If you bought the spark plugs conforming to your car make and model it shouldn't be a problem. if you bought it without conforming to your car needs the threading could be unmatched to the car's threading thus can cause it to strip the threading in the engine for your spark plug. usually the piston would hit the plug if there is not a good enough gap.
why not take them back and get the right ones? but im not sure if it would effect the detonation int he cylinder but there's a chance the pistons would hit the spark plugs
Check the length from it's seat, where it stops on the head,to it's ground electrode. Some plugs have threads that look goofie.
Yes it will hurt in more ways than one!!

The length of the threads is called %26quot;reach%26quot;. and this is how deep the plug goes into the head, now if the reach is too long you can cause immediate problems such as a piston strike which will damage the piston. If you are lucky enough to dodge that bullet, there is another problem waiting for you when you change the plugs again. The threads that are exposed inside of the head will become filled with carbon making them difficult to remove, and even if you are able to get them out the threads will probably be ruined.

Better on yourself or whoever works on the car next, would to be to get the correct plugs to start with. By the way when you have the right ones, replace them one at a time so that you do not ruin the firing order.
The position of the spark plug tip in the combustion chamber also affects combustion efficiency and how the gases enter and leave the cylinder. I'd also question whether the plugs have the same heat range. It's never a good idea to change plug characteristics without a good reason and knowing that the new plugs will solve the problem. In the long run you'll probably be better off putting in a set of plugs that meet the OEM specifications..
Doesn't matter, since you will be changing those plugs sooner than later, anyway.

Bosch plugs do not seem to like anything but Euro cars for whatever reason.

Get ready for some practice! (Cue Allen Iverson, %26quot;We talkin' about practice???%26quot;)

Spark plug torque settings for a 98 ranger?

i'm changing the spark plugs on my truck. i don't know the torque settings
Spark plug torque settings for a 98 ranger?
Torque specs are 15-20ft lbs, but you're better off just tightening down hand-tight plus half turn of socket. If you over torque it, getting it off will be rough. Not to mention if you break it, it'll cost you bucks. Be aware, if you tighten it too much, the metal gasket will crush beyond it's ability to seal off the cyclinder from leaking oil coming from old valve cover gaskets.
Spark plug torque settings for a 98 ranger?
their is none just put them in and just snug them up, dont over tighten them
HAND TIGHT
Tighter than chimpanzee tight but less than gorilla tight. I would stick with the German torque guintight.

Spark plugs are not critical. Torque value not needed.

get them tight enogh to compress the retained washer and go another 1/4 turn.

Changing spark plugs on 2000 Pontiac trans am 5.7?

I need to know if there is an easy way to change the spark plugs on the passenger side of the car. the a/c unit and lines smack in the way also the spark plug wires have metal jackets hard to get hold of I have tried every tool and idea I can think of.
Changing spark plugs on 2000 Pontiac trans am 5.7?
you will have to raise car to get to plugs.nothing easy about this job.go in from bottom ,
Changing spark plugs on 2000 Pontiac trans am 5.7?
Now I don't know this for sure on your car, but on some of the older Chevy Caprices you had to change the plugs by going at them through the wheel wells. Basically all you had to do was remove the tire and splash shield and you had easier access from the side than from above. Don't know if this helps--just some idle speculation. Good luck!
good luck, we would actually take the bolt out of that motor mount and jack the passenger side of the engine up
The best way I know of is to try to attack it from under the car. If that don't get it you can all ways dismount the a/c compressor and get a buddy to hold it out of the way but DO NOT disconnect the a/c lines. You risk contaminating the system with moisture and you don't what to know what you have to do to fix that.
I used to own a 95 TA and I know from experience that everything under the hood is tightly packed together. There isn't room for s*it under there. I would suggest taking it to a mechanic or someone who is able to remove the motor mounts to get the engine out of the way.

  • Spark plug change on a vauxhall calibra?

hi all' i have a vauxhall calibra 1992 j reg 16v and was thinking about changing the spark plugs. can anyone suggest which type would be best for this type of car? reason for changing them is i seem to have lost some power in acceleration.. many thanks
Spark plug change on a vauxhall calibra?
Check the Cat converter hasen't decided to fail as when they do bits break up and block the exhaust = loss of power.

Also check crank case speed sensor.

BY PUTTING A NEW ONE ON I GUARANTEE YOUR CAR WILL BE BETTER AND FASTER.

A bit like changing the dizzy cap on old motors.

Is your engine a red top or eco teck 16v.

Finally But the most expensive plugs you can for your car if its power you are after.

I would check the first things i mentioned first.
Spark plug change on a vauxhall calibra?
contact your spare parts dealer he will suggest you well.
if your changing the plugs i would advise changing the leads as well unless they have been recently done. also improving the air intake or even replacing the air filter will help.

Changing spark plugs on an 02 eclipse V6?

I have a 2002 mits eclipse V6, how do i get at the back 3 plugs on my V6, do i have to pull the intake or is there a way to reach them with dismantling part of the motor?
Changing spark plugs on an 02 eclipse V6?
In order to get to the rear 3 plugs you must remove the Intake manifold to get access to the valve cover/plugs.
Changing spark plugs on an 02 eclipse V6?
not you dont have to take anything apart, its just wonderful engineering. the right tools make it way way easier. extensions and lots of cursing usually works.
damn japenese cars. if you didnt know this before, the engineers designe the car motor first then put the body around it. really suck when your trying to work on it with absolutely zero room... jsut eep trying you will get it eventually

Spark plug wires not pushed down all the way on the distributor end?

I changed the spark plug wires in my '93 civic, the correct lengths on the correct spark plugs in the correct firing order, but the end that plugs in to the distributor I can't get the rubber part all the way over the plastic nubs. If it's connected (it pops on and off here, but just doesn't cover the plastic part) is this a problem?
Spark plug wires not pushed down all the way on the distributor end?
you can slide wire boot back first put wire in cap till clecks in slide boot back on cap wire nub wd40 will help to slide an drys in a little wile
Spark plug wires not pushed down all the way on the distributor end?
    Wrong wires.
the rubber boot is pulled up on the wires too far. pull the boot down some and see if it will go on the cap.

My husband was changing the spark plugs on my car, when he tried to crank it, a small fire started.?

I drive a 1999 Ford Taurus. %26quot;I%26quot; know to only take off one spark plug/wire at a time but he took them all off and of course is trying to figure out how they go. But when he was doing this, a small fire started. We poured water on it, but I'm concerned about damage and what started it. HELP?
My husband was changing the spark plugs on my car, when he tried to crank it, a small fire started.?
the engine will back flow the fire if you don't have the spark plugs in the right order what causes this is it ignites in the cylinder when the intake valve is open and ignites the fuel as its coming in if no hoses were burnt or anything on the outside of the motor you should be fine just get the correct firing order and put them on right and you should be fine

PS it can burn as it kicks the fuel back
My husband was changing the spark plugs on my car, when he tried to crank it, a small fire started.?
Should not have been anything under the hood to catch fire. Tow it to a professional to diagnose-it sounds like he knocked something loose. As far as how bad the damage is-kinda hard to see from here....................................
Should not of dumped water in there like that. I would take it to the shop but if little bit of water went in the motor .You can get a manual or maybe even the owners manual you have and it should tell you the order the plugs go.

also recheck the gap in the plugs on it,and don't rule out the possibility of a bad wire on it,that was the most common cause of one miss firing when removing the wires they will get damaged in some cases, good luck.

Double check that the plug wires are in the correct firing order.

What is the spark plug wire order on the distributor cap of a 92 honda accord?

i changed my spark plug wires and forgot to do one at a time and put them back where they came from. so now my car runs but its like it has no horsepower. it never dies just likes to go slow. like its not running on all 4 cylinders
What is the spark plug wire order on the distributor cap of a 92 honda accord?
Start at the top and go clockwise 2,1,3, 4 on the distributor Cap.

You're number 1 cylinder on the engine is the one closet to your fan belts. ( Right side when facing the engine)
What is the spark plug wire order on the distributor cap of a 92 honda accord?

Changed spark plugs and now i hear a noise?

I changed my mustang 07 spark plugs yesterday and started to hear a hissing sound. My sensors do not say anything and usually if something is wrong i am alarmed saying to check engine or something. I tried changing spark plugs well with the other 5 left and it still does it. I havent changes the spark plugs before since i got it in 2007 could it be that because its a new spark plug there is a noise?
Changed spark plugs and now i hear a noise?
you probably knocked a vacuum line off of it is the reason your getting a check engine light,go over it and check it out real good changing plugs shouldn't cause any problems with it,the computer monitors certain sensors and this can cause that light to come on,good luck with it.
Changed spark plugs and now i hear a noise?
Make sure that you didn't accidently pull a vacuum hose loose somewhere. Spark plugs won't make a hissing sound unless maybe you didn't get one tight. Why did you change the plugs in a '07 car? Those plugs should have been good for at least 100,000 miles.
What a lesson this should be for you-IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIX IT.
You almost for sure knocked a vaccum line off while changing your plugs. I work at a ford dealership around here and ive people come in with the same problem and the same situation about 15 times in the last few months

Whats the secret in changing the middle spark plug (drivers side) on a chevy blazer 2001?

I changed all the other plugs but cannot get the socket and rachet onto that plug. why did they put the steering rack bar right in the way. any suggestings.............
Whats the secret in changing the middle spark plug (drivers side) on a chevy blazer 2001?
Remove the bolt at either end and remove the steering bar itself to gain access. Make sure your wheel is lined up right when you reassemble it. I had to do this to install headers on mine, and it was a good time to get at that plug, too.
Whats the secret in changing the middle spark plug (drivers side) on a chevy blazer 2001?
I use a flexable two u joint spark plug scoket and a two foot long extension
I own a shop, and %26quot;yes%26quot; its like they enjoy making you drive yourself crazy trying to get that one plug! If the idiots that designs these vehicles had to work on them, they would be made a lot different, wouldn't they?

Try removing the wheel, and going through the fender well with a long extension. If you have to, you can put a jack under the motor, and raise it enough to get the rig to work. The motor will raise a few inches without doing any damage because the motor mounts will move that much. Have you ever seen the engine move when you mash the accelerator? It will move up on the drivers side due to the torque of the engine. I'm sorry to report; I have had some that we had to take the bolts out of the mount in order to get the plug out. Go figure? If you look at your socket, it should have a place on it at the end for a wrench. This is another option if you can get a wrench on it from under the vehicle. A wobble socket will get it sometimes too. To get the new plug in, try a piece of hose plugged onto the plug to turn it with. Sure makes it a little easier to get it started when putting the new one in. I always use silicone lube on the boots to make them easy to snap on after changing the plug.

Did I mention I own one of these vehicles, and have changed the plugs a couple of times? A long extension is a %26quot;must%26quot; and you may have to use a wobble on the socket. I don't know why someone who doesn't have one of these vehicles would know something I don't about changing them. The motor mounts settle, and the engines will sit at different heights (depending on how much the mounts have settled) from one vehicle to the other, and when a 1/4%26quot; makes the difference, jacking the engine up to gain that much is what it takes. The long extension that will flex/wobble is a must, but you can go around the steering shaft. You %26quot;MUST%26quot; go through the fender well. Just raise the flap off the A frame, and you can see how its done.

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!
You can get a spark plug socket that has a hex head on the end where the ratchet goes in. Just put the socket on the spark plug then use a wrench to the loosen the plug. I've seen these sockets all my life but never thought of it's use until I finished changing the plugs on my Blazer. Good luck!
good reason not to buy a chevy I say.
I just recently changed mine on my 4.3l which i am assuming you have. I just used a pair of pliers to lossen the spark plug then just unscrew with hands, do the same on putting it in.

1998 ford windstar wont run properly after spark plug change, chugs at low speeds and wont idle when warm?

i took my windstar in for a tune up and it hasnt run properly since, all they said they did was change the spark plugs, now it barely runs. it hesitates at lower speeds, chugs at low speeds, and doesnt like to idle in gear after the vehicle has warmed up?
1998 ford windstar wont run properly after spark plug change, chugs at low speeds and wont idle when warm?
i think the plug gap being incorrect or wires not clicked into place correctly could very well be the problem, but a bit unlikely. keep in mind though before you take it back to the shop that tuned up your car, it could be a completely different problem, something that has nothing to do with the plugs and wires that have been replaced and if you take it back to them and they find this, your gonna be charged for the labor and diagnostics required to fix this new problem. id let the shop you took your car to know about the drivability issues youve been having since the tune up and tell them that your taking it elswhere. if it turns out that the work they performed on your car is the cause of these drivability issues then you expect them to pay the bill from the other shop and see what they say.

if you take your car back to the original shop who did the work and it is another problem (which it very well can be) then you will not believe them regardless if it is or not. you will think they are ripping you off. keep in mind that sensors and electrical problems especially can happen at any time on a car just like that. and they can be very hard to find. it may take lots of time to find an electrical problem if it is one and you will get charged for all the time it takes for them to find the problem. and in the end they may not. and you will think the shop is ripping you off. take it somewhere else and let them know the work that was recently done on the car. they will double check the work and let you know of any additional problems with your van.
1998 ford windstar wont run properly after spark plug change, chugs at low speeds and wont idle when warm?
Maybe they didn't emember to gap the plugs correctly before installing them. They aren't gapped properly right out-of-the-box.

You need to go back to whomever did the tune-up and make them fix your problem.

    Good Luck!
Hate to say it ,,, but,, Take care of the car yourself if you don't have a shop that you can trust. The van's getting old %26amp; maintenance will help it last. Pick up a 'haynes' manual for about $18 and go through all the required maint. Trans.,fuel filter, coolant, etc.
I'd take it back and speak to the owner, if it's a reputable repair facility, they'd be happy to correct the situation, if it's a shade tree shop, then you might be out some money.
agreed..may the spark plugs were not gapped correctly..

BUT..they may have crossed the a couple spark plug wires...
Double check that all the spark plug wires are connected to the correct spark plugs. Could be a loose/bad wire or plug too.

  • What would cause one spark plug to keep breaking?

I have a 92 ford explorer and about once a month I need to change one spark plug because it is broken but all the others are fine? What is wrong?
What would cause one spark plug to keep breaking?
Plug breaking? If the porcelain is breaking around the electrode, check for coolant leak in that cyl.
What would cause one spark plug to keep breaking?
Check the engine mounts. Sounds like one is broken (almost certain to be the left side) allowing the engine to torque over enough for the plug to hit something.
Maybe carbon has built up in that cylinder and is hitting the plug. I have seen plug damage due to worn bearings that allowed the piston to actually hit the plug. Try a shorter plug in that one cylinder as a test.

How hard is it to change spark plug wires?

how hard is it to change spark plug wires in a 01 grand prix

i know u have to take them out and put them in the same order but how hard are they to get to and take out
How hard is it to change spark plug wires?
well its not that hard if you know what your doing. i would recommend knowing your firing order and knowing where each wire came from upon removal and when you remove them all you need to lay them somewhere flat next to each other and compare length for length to their new counterparts. and make sure once you match the length you double check the length again and the put it exactly where the old counterparts came out of.
How hard is it to change spark plug wires?
It is not very hard at all. Just take them off one at a time and make sure to put them back in the little clips that hold them away from heat. One hour job.. max.
yes it is not hard but make shore you put them on in the right order

just do one at a time matching them with each other
its easy as everyone else said one at a time. when you do it get a hold of the wire real close to the spark plug other wise the metal clip will stay on there. when you put your new wires on you should feel them seat when there on right.other wise you motor will miss.
Not that easy (People need to note what you're working on!) - you have to separate the front motor mount and tilt the engine forward to get at the rear plugs unless you have very small nimble hands. Change the plugs at the same time.

What is the importance of changing the spark plugs on your 2000 Honda Accord at 100k miles?

I'm at 96k now and need a timing belt and spark plugs. A broken timing belt will ruin your car, so I'm doing that ASAP but for money's sake, how important is having the spark plugs replaced? Can it wait till the scheduled time?
What is the importance of changing the spark plugs on your 2000 Honda Accord at 100k miles?
I would go ahead and do it, you will get more power and gas mileage and your car will run smoother. The manufactures rating on this maintenance is a bit long in my opinion. Also a broken timing belt in most cars will not hurt anything it will just require your car to be towed. I am unaware if you engine is a inference type or not. If not then yo do not have to worry about not changing the belt destroying your engine.
What is the importance of changing the spark plugs on your 2000 Honda Accord at 100k miles?
heehee - it can wait but dont leave it forever, renewing them will help the engine running smoothly
The sooner you replace your spark plugs, the better. Sometimes, they can be very difficult to remove from the cylinder heads, and the new ones should have antisieze compound on the threads to make them easy to remove. I would stick with the original replacement manufacturer and part number for the new plugs, unless Honda specifies an updated replacement. If you have an %26quot;interference%26quot; type engine in which the pistons can damage the valves when the timing belt breaks or slips, getting the timing belt replaced is your first priority. It's a $500 job at a Honda dealer. Check to see if you should replace your water pump and serpentine belt tensioner at the same time to save on future repair costs.

Changing the spark plugs in my car?

Its time to change the spark plugs on my car I have the basic Delco PLugs in their right now its what came with the car. But Delco makes a Platinum plug called the Spit Fire what are the benefits of this plug over the regular Delco plugs. Its for a 93 Grand Prix with 3.1L MPFI V6 with 177K.
Changing the spark plugs in my car?
The only advantage of a platinum plug vs. a regular or copper plug is that it lasts longer. You will not gain any additional power or magically make the engine run more efficiently.

I agree with above...just stick with what is recommended by GM. If they say regular copper plugs work fine, stick 'em in.
Changing the spark plugs in my car?
It does not need them...so would be a wste of money
Platinum plugs take longer to wear out. That is the only benefit that I can think of.
I have heard of no other benefits other then they last longer. But I always stick with what it came with, even if I have to change them every 30K. Do they make those in the same heat range for your car? If so I guess you can try them, but again, My motto is if it is not broke, Don`t fix it.

I can open the spark plug inspection panel but the rest is a little mystifying! The pictures in the owners manual are hopeless.
Can anyone give me a lecture on how to change a spark plug on a Vespa LX 125 (preferably with pictures!)?
I assume that you know enough to follow the spark plug wire down to the plug...(It can be seen through the inspection panel, and the plug is on the right side of the cylinder (as you sit on the bike). When I bought mine, the owner had hacked a hole in the body, and used a rubber plug to seal the hole. He said everyone in the Carribean Islands make this mod because the plug is very hard to remove and replace. I actually think that this is quite clever. The body is strong enough, and the rubber plug makes it look real neat. I think there is room to reach in there through the inspection panel with tools, (like with swivels, etc.)... but if not, then you can pop the exhaust, the airbox, and the throttle cable, then pop the 2 shocks, then you can drop the whole engine down, and get to it real easy...

How do I change the spark plug wires on my 1998 chevrolet S10 pickup? It has the 2.2L?

I changed the plugs and the wires were kinda old and now there is a miss-fire.I need to change the plug wires but they kinda dissappear under the intake. pics or help would be very very nice
How do I change the spark plug wires on my 1998 chevrolet S10 pickup? It has the 2.2L?
i own a repair shop,,and you need to pull them one at a time on it,,and measure as you go with it so they match back up good on it,also make sure they go all the way in good ,on the plugs as well as they cap,and this will make it have a good connection, and that's about all there is to do on it just take your time with it,and you,ll be fine with it,,good luck i hope this help,s.
How do I change the spark plug wires on my 1998 chevrolet S10 pickup? It has the 2.2L?
    one at a time
replace them one at a time starting from the distributor cap even if you have to crawl under the truck,, but they should be fairly easy to see...if you can change the plugs at this angle with a socket driver changing the wires is a peice of cake
just make sure you replace one at time so you don't get them mixed up.
get a book on the car or go to the web, they have to be in order or you know mis-fire
well remove the plastic cover and it'll help, but if your truck wasn't missing before you changed the plugs make sure you firing order is correct or you didn't mess up a gap when installing your plugs.
I also own the SLOW 2.2L the coil packs are on the passenger side underneath the intake. they are numbered for each cylinder 1,2,3,4 very clearly, you can do all of them at once it is not a problem the number one cylinder is the very front one and 4 is the farthest back. if you have a misfire you probably just switched one of the plugs an easy way to tell is unplug each one whil it is running and see if one changes even more or if it doesnt make a difference.

How do you go about changing the spark plugs in a 2000 Yamaha V-Star 1100 classic?

I am having trouble locating the spark plugs in my motorcycle, if anyone has any info on how to do so or a link to a site with an image walkthrough that would be great.
How do you go about changing the spark plugs in a 2000 Yamaha V-Star 1100 classic?
The easy answer is that they are at the end of your spark plug wires.

As I recall, the plugs are not easy to access, and require a long socket, a swivel, an extension and ratchet to loosen the plugs, and a magnet to remove remove them.

Try contacting Star Riders Assoc. Those kinds of owners clubs are usually a wealth of info and tips.

How do you change a spark plug boot?

I have a straight boot on one of the plug wires and its sitting on the header i was wondering how to replace it with a 90 degree boot. Can someone please tell me step by step how to do it. Or do i need to buy all new plug wires.
How do you change a spark plug boot?
your best bet would be to replace the wires. If they were custom/ cut and boot yourself wires, then just cut off the str8 boot and crimp on the new elbow boot (assuming you have enough length). but wires aren't that pricey and it's a whole lot eaiser to just replace them.
How do you change a spark plug boot?
Usually new wires are the best bet - the old ones are probably worn out anyway.

You might be able to find some angle ones that crimp on, but any high-resistance connection (worn wire, bad connection, etc) will cause you to lose spark.

Changing spark plugs/wires on 1994 buick regal custom, 3.1 engine.?

I am changing the spark plugs and need to rotate the engine to reach the back plugs. How do I do this? Is it a one man job? I do not have a lot of auto repair experience.
Changing spark plugs/wires on 1994 buick regal custom, 3.1 engine.?
Transverse mounted engine? Apply parking brake and place transmission in 'neutral' (engine off of course). You will see a 'dog bone' engine mount in center by radiator. Remove the back bolt (I think). Place a bar in the lift bracket and rock the motor forward enough to place the bolt back in the next hole. This will tip the engine forward enough to reach the back 3 spark plugs. It's still a tight fit, but it helps.

    Hope this helps.

Just use a small angled pry bar to remove the 'heat shields' that are around the plug. These help shield the spark plug wire boot from the heat given off by the exh manifold.

DONT monky around with the engine,it's a pain and it will take a while be sure engine is cool and i also sugest the best manual you can buy at your local auto store,it's called Haynes and it's like $20 after taxes,or http://haynes.com take your time and just take a break when you get frustrated, cause trust me you will i did my dads plugs a few months ago same engine and yeah it's a *****.
Gosh, if you got to take the engine out just to do a tune up why don't you just take it to Sears for the 19.95 special.
The 3100 SFI is a very common power platform for GM, it's been in many many models and is still being produced today. By no means do you need to %26quot;rotate%26quot; the engine to get to the back plugs. I did get a good chuckle from the comment however ;)

It may seem impossible but I can assure you it's not. I've personally changed the plugs on at least 30 of those suckers. Some vehicles are more difficult than others (the 3100 in a Chevy Malibu tops them all).

You'll need the right tools for the job of course. A swivel attachment for your ratchet (driver) can be of great assistance when trying to reach plugs on the back side of an engine. Other than that you'll have to fight with it a little bit. If I recall climbing into the engine compartment (knees on the intake) makes it a bit easier to get your tools/hands onto the back side of the engine. You can also attach the spark plug socket to the plug first and then attach the ratchet, this is often times easier than trying to attach the ratchet/socket at the same time.

Good luck...and please, don't ever try and %26quot;rotate%26quot; an engine ;)

  • I broke one of my spark plug wires - can I still drive?

So while changing my spark plugs, I broke the rules and pulled the plug wire by the wire and not by the boot, and it broke. When it came off, there was a silver metal part of the wire still attached to the spark plug. I pulled that part off and shoved it back into the boot. What if I reattach that wire and drive like that? Will my truck work fine on 5 cylinders? Will there be some kind of electrical misfire and I'll explode? I already know the answer to my dilemma - go buy some new spark plug wires - but I would like to know the answers to these questions if anyone out there knows them. Thanks a ton. PS. I have a '94 Ford Ranger, in case you want to know.
I broke one of my spark plug wires - can I still drive?
The truck will still run,not exploding or fire or anything, will lost much power, hesitation when accelerating, but very harmful to your catalytic converter, when engine misfired from no spark, the raw fuel will damage the very expensive component of the emission system.
I broke one of my spark plug wires - can I still drive?
You'll probably be O.K. to drive it to the store to buy new wires, but you'll have reduced performance due to that one cylinder not producing power, and your truck will be a hair noisier. Don't drive any farther than you have to though; and if possible find another way to the store. But in a pinch... you can get your truck around without too much worry.
    NO
yes it will still drive with 5 cylinders. it will not drive properly and it may cause other parts to malfunction ( check engine light, o2 sensor, transmission sensors and so on. )
Leave the wire unplugged, it will be ok, it will only lose performance and gas milage, just use it to go to the store...
Broken spark plug wires usually leads to knocky engines if it starts at all. If there is loose connection, or if the wire is partially broken, you might be able to drive the car on 5 cylinders, but electrical leakage may not allow you to rev up your engine. Dont worry about any explosions, but there might be internal misfires, which I believe is not too good for the engine. Try to open the boot from the wire and attatch a the metal parts together for a temopary solution till you get a new one.
you can drive it but you will have a bad miss until you fix that plug wire, and no the truck won't explode or do anything crazy like that.
Actually, if you cut the wire a bit shorter, and then cut the outer part back to expose about a half inch of the core, you can simply recrimp the silver part back onto the wire and drive on. I have done this many times, and never had a problem.

The reason for cutting the wire shorter is in case you have separated the core near the end where you were pulling. A few inches should do.

Does anyone have experience in changing the spark plugs on a 2003 ford expedition?

I see that the fuel injection heads are in very close proximity to the spark plugs and was wondering if I can get some advice or a link stating in detail how to go about accomplishing the task. Now I am assuming that the Fuel Injectors get removed. Any advise on the process for replacing the spark plugs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks In Advance. Ben-
Does anyone have experience in changing the spark plugs on a 2003 ford expedition?
The actual process itself is not very difficult to describe. It is can be a very challenging task for someone who is inexperienced, due to the tight confines of this particular application. You DO NOT need to remove the fuel injectors to start with. The ONLY thing you need to remove are the eight COPs (Coil-On-Plugs) to gain access to the spark plugs. To do this, simply disconnect all eight COPs by disconnecting each electrical connector by simply squeezing and pulling gently on the connector to each COP. Next, get your 1/4%26quot; drive ratchet and short extension with either a 7mm or 9/32%26quot; socket and remove the one bolt that secures each COP to the intake manifold. Remove each COP by simply twisting and pulling it out of each spark plug hole, GENTLY. You may want to inspect each COP rubber boot and replace as necessary. Be careful of the one under the fuel rail connection to the fuel supply line. Once this is achieved, simply remove all eight spark plugs using a suitably sized extension and spark plug socket. The four that are on the passenger side may be a little more difficult to access due to the heater hoses being in the way, especially if this vehicle is equipped with rear heat and A/C. Just be careful. One final note. USE ONLY Ford/Motorcraft spark plugs. Aftermarket plugs seem to be known to cause issues on these vehicles. Hope this helps.

I do not believe the fuel rail has to come off if this is like f 2004 f 250 i did today the coil on plug design requires a 7 mm socket and about 3 hours of frustration. a set of locking extensions and a plug socket with a swivel attached also very reccomendable for the job. good luck oh and i had the luxury of a topside creeper.

Why is my spark plug smashing in my car and can a shorter spark plug be used>?

    I kept getting a misfire cylinder 5 from the code reader, changed plugs and wires and did a tune up. After approx. 15 miles it started running REALLY bad and eventually died. I was able to drive the car home. I pulled the spark plug after getting the code again and it was smashed. What would cause this and what is the cure? Is it possible to put a shorter neck plug in and drive for a while longer before changing motor%26gt;
Why is my spark plug smashing in my car and can a shorter spark plug be used%26gt;?
You put the wrong plug in, so the cylinder smashed into it on it's way up.

Also, don't just put in a random shorter plug - there is more than just length to worry about.

Make sure you get the correct plug size for your vehicle, and make sure the gap setting is correct for your engine (any autoparts store will have a book to look up your car and engine to find the correct one)

the gap setting can be found online or in a repair manual (such as Haynes) - most plugs are preset to the range when you buy them though - just good to make sure.
Why is my spark plug smashing in my car and can a shorter spark plug be used%26gt;?
Ouch, some cars require shorter plugs, pull one of the good plugs or check your manual...good luck
it is possible that was the wrong plug somehow to begin with. check with the dealer about correct spark plug, and make sure and get the right one, take the smashed one with you. ( I hope just the electrode was pounded flat) put in the new spark plug and see how it runs,
if you havent already poked a whole in the piston, you can use a shorter plug, but, the best fix for this to purchase an anti fouling adapter at any parts house. simply install this extender in the hole first, then put your normal size plug into it.
not sure what type of car you have but, go to you parts store and see if they have any header plugs. They work well and are shorter.

There is only one thing that can physically smash your spark plug like that when the engine is running. The PISTON!! You don't have the correct spark plug installed. It's reaching to far into the combustion chamber and getting hit by the piston. Check compression on the engine, make sure you didn't crack a hole into any pistons.

The spark plug wires lead down next to the front right tire. The question is how do you go about it?

You will need to raise the truck up and slide under the front right tire. You will also have to take the intake baffle off. Change the spark plug wires one by one if possible. What I'm looking for is the correct step by step way to get the wires down.

sounds like the spark plugs did you tighten up correctly taper seat 1/8 turn after taper touches seat or if gasket type 1/4 turn after gasket touches seat if you did is it a constant hiss or hissing as piston comes up just because the spark plugs are new don't mean there any good i have had center come out of new plugs

youre local car hardware store should be able to provide a spray on delocker that'll penetrate the thread
Plugs should be checked at least every 2 years to avoid this from happening. I've seen this alot when I used to work in various dealerships. It's solidified carbon deposits. You need a good lubricant/penetrating fluid. You should be able to pick one up at an auto supply store. Tell them the difficulty you're having and they can get you the right product. Let in soak in and torque those plugs loose, be careful not to break them or the spark plug wells.
You should get new wires and pull out the old one in bits.
YOU WILL HAVE TO BREAK THEM APART USE A SMALL REGULAR SCREWDRIVER TRY TO GET UNDER IT AND POP IT UP BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOMETHING IN YOUR SPARK PLUG SLEEVES TO CATCH ANY THING THAT GO'S IN.
When you replace your seals or snap your plug wires back on the plugs ALWAYS smear a light coat of high dielectric silicone ignition grease inside the plug boots and around the plug seals. They will come of easily in the far future.
Try letting oil soak in around them, maybe wd40. Just saturate the upper half of the spark plug that you can see, let it sit there for a day or so. See if that helps.

If not, you might be in a mess. You dont want to break one off in there or strip the threads.

    EDIT:

After reading your question again i think i might have mis-understood you. Do you mean the boot of the spark plug wire is stuck on the spark pug itself? Or that you cant get the spark pug out of the engine?

If its only the rubber boot stuck on the spark plug, just take yourself a good sharp knife and cut those suckers off. Go out and buy yourself a new set of spark plug cables while you are at it. You probably needed to replace them anyways.
well friend,i would say you better get new ones, because if they are that hard, you will probably break them, trying to get them off.and besides if they are hard, then they probably wont seal back again, even if you can get them off.

When to change the spark plug on a crf250r?
You need a spark plug spanner particular to the bike as it needs to be longer. One usually comes with the bike. If the bike is getting hard to start then change the spark plug
When to change the spark plug on a crf250r?
I replace spark plugs often...very often. For a race bike every other race. If money is an issue at the very least pull the plug and look at it every other race. If it is light to mid brown and the crush washer not squished flat reuse it. Any black or crush washer squished flat replace. Most plugs are less than $3.00 so you should keep several with you always.
Every 5 gallons of gas is when i change mine. They are cheap and will make your bike run better!
replace when it gets hard to start if you dont chaNGE it, it will be harder to start

Two of the spark plug tubes that cover the spark plug have already been broken as they were pulled.
How are spark plug cables taken out to change the spark plugs of a 1996 E320 Mercedes Benz?
The cables and the plugs are taken out the same way as on any other car. You just have to do it very accurately in order not to brake them. The problem is that there's very little room there.

You can take off some parts, which are in the way to get more space or just continue struggle with them in that limited space.

Maybe it's good you broke a couple of them: probably they were old and brittle and need replacement anyway.

Sticking with the maintenance schedule is never a bad idea. If you are having no problems changing the plugs can help to continue that trend. You may not notice any substainal difference in performance but for the relatively low cost of the service it is a good idea.
Keep a set of wires and plugs in tour car at all times. You never know when you might need them..A small get you home toolkit helps too.

    Dr Antony
The original plug wires should last for the lifetime of the car. It is foolish to waste money on them, if they are not arcing or severely damaged from oil or heat rot. New plugs can improve things, but only if you are using an %26quot;updated%26quot; technology plug, like an Iridium or iridium + titanium plug. It does more for a car to have your IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE clean, and your throttle body and plate and PCV hose and valve, too. These are the things that throw the fuel mixture off balance and cause expensive problems, like cat failure or exhaust leaks. Save the money for wires. Also, de-sludge the engine and use ONLY synthetic oil. It saves gas and prolongs engine life as it does NOT make harmful sludge. It cleans as you drive!

Sounds like water in the gas tank. Drain the gas tank and add fresh fuel.
Try changing the oil...sometimes that helps.(draining and replacing completely).
Could be bad fuel. Also, check the lever that the start/run cable attatches to. Try moving it manually full open while simultaneously holding the handle for starting in position. Check the plug wire again.
does it have a needle valve with float the cup that holds needle valve could be partialy filled with water . check out.
Take the carb bowl off with the fuel turned off hold the float up turn fuel on see if it flows, water can form in the boal also.

  • Dodge charger rt spark plug question?

The maintenance scheduleon my 2006 dodge charger rt requires replacing the spark plugs every 30k. Too me it just sounds like dealer is trying to get money, i have owned alot of cars from beat up, broken down cars, to near luxury cars, and i have at least gone 60k without changing the spark plugs. What do you think? Do you think the sparks plugs last longer then 30k, or do you think the dealer is just trying to get extra money buy have customers come in every 30k for a spark plug change.
Dodge charger rt spark plug question?
30K is a lot of miles for the heart of the engine to take.

I change my plugs 3X per year or more.

This gives you the best performance

    best mileage

    cleaner burning engine

    Less carbon buildup

And it is a pretty cheap thing to do.
Dodge charger rt spark plug question?
dealers are always smart in making extra money.
Come on open the owners manual to maintenance chart and follow it over to 30k and go down the list. If the car came with tungsten spark plugs yes 30k is just about right. Platinum Spark plugs I drive them until there is a problem 60 to 100,000 miles. Word of caution here misfiring engine can destroy your expensive cat converters. And by waiting so long to touch plugs they might not come out of the heads so well and if there connected to plug wires replace the wires and plugs at the same time (misfire) emission system damage.
The Dealer did NOT write the maintianence schedule, the manufacturer did.

When you buy the spark plugs from the parts store, the dealer does not make any money.

30,00 miles is TWO YEARS for the AVERAGE driver.

My 1968 Dodge Charger gets new plugs every 5,000 miles( a SMALL price for high performance.
Do what you want and accept the risks you take.

The dealership wants to charge me $554 for changing spark plugs, fuel filters, and cleaning injectors?

Does this sound like a reasonable cost for a 2002 Hyundai Accent?
The dealership wants to charge me $554 for changing spark plugs, fuel filters, and cleaning injectors?
    Your joking right?

Are they cleaning the injectors or completely replacing them?

Parts from a dealership is a little more expensive, and they charge for their expertise, but I still wouldn't expect the total cost to run more than $250 from a dealership.
The dealership wants to charge me $554 for changing spark plugs, fuel filters, and cleaning injectors?
I don't have personal experience with Hyundai, but it sounds outrageous. You can look online at websites like Advance Auto Parts:

    http://www.advanceautoparts.com

and find the parts that you need, and get the part price. Spark plugs are only a couple dollars a piece, and if Fram or other companies are making the fuel filters, they should be more reasonable than what the dealer charges. If you have a local mechanic who you know is honest you should get a quote from him. If you don't know one, you can go to:

    http://www.cartalk.com/

and they have a place where you can put in your zip code and find a local mechanic. I think that you should end up with a bill half of what the dealer is charging....
dealerships are always the highest places. Check with local mechanic shops.
cant you replace the car for that much
no. it sounds very high. I paid approx $175 for a package like that at Midas earlier this year. A dealer is not the best place for routine work-they'e too expensive.
    No. It is not reasonable.

Dealerships tend to be more expensive than garages/mechanics, but this is way above what it should be for the three things mentioned.

You could look into changing the plugs by yourself. A flexible-head wrench and socket are inexpensive and will stay available for future use.

Cleaning the injectors actually CAN be done by adding liquid injector cleaners to the fuel. You pour a bottle of it in the tank when filling it. If you have problems with the system, but the engine still runs fairly well, use two bottles of injector cleaner.

Run the car until the fuel is almost gone before re-filling.

Usually, this simple and inexpensive technique will work.

My cars do get checked by dealers for other services, including emission/exhaust output, and they have always received top rating.

I began using fuel injector cleaners more than fifteen years ago, and have yet to have a problem with them or with the results they deliver.
whatzz no way man that way to much for mainance

go to a local auto chop most of them are as good or better than dealer .

    sparkplugs $60

    fuel filters about $100

cleannig injectors about $60 good luck

all this is including labor don,t pay more than $200 for this services
I have worked at several Dealerships over the past ten years, Anytime that you take your vehicle to the dealer for repairs that are not under warranty you will usually pay about twice the price to have the same work performed by an independent shop or a shop like midas. The dealer uses something called flag hours, that means if THEIR book shows that job takes 3 hours that is what they will charge you, regardless of the actual time it will take. I Hope this info helps you..
I used to drive a 2001 Accent for a courier company and I changed the spark plugs myself. EXTREMELY easy, because they were right up front and easy to reach!! If you can't do it, then get a friend to do it. Give him $5!!

To clean injectors, go to Walmart Auto dept, buy a $5 bottle of gas cleaner in a metal bottle. Use it for one gas tank, and injectors should be cleaned. To make sure add another bottle about 2 fill-ups LATER. (When you refill after the first gas tank of additive, there's always still some left in tank to help clean thru 2nd tank of gas.)

The fuel filter might be harder. Might need a mechanic for that. Check around with friends and family for a good local mechanic who might change your fuel filter for much cheaper than $500 from dealer!!! Might only cost $60 for fuel filter by mechanic. So you've now saved over $400!!!

If you enjoy saving that $400, you can send me 10% at.........
At that price they should be including the Timing Belt as well, or did you forget that bit? If that does include the T-Belt then the price is just fine.
Absolutely not! You can change the plugs and fuel filter yourself. Add a can of 3M fuel injector / combustion chamber cleaner in your fuel tank and save $500.00. Foreign car companies have a habit of gouging the tar out of people because their basic parts are 33-50% more expensive than the American Chrysler, Ford or GM. What you may save in gas mileage you pay dearly on the other end.
    yikes...!!

    run away, run away...

find a non-dealer mechanic or check out craigslist in your area...look under the Service section for Automotive, you may find some shadetree mechanic to do the work for cheap...
unfortunately its about right at the dealership...... ask around find a good local mechanic.... try Napa auto centers they will be less expensive.... too

Do spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs?

Do spark plug wires actually break-down with use?

Do they need to be replaced because of the possibility of damage upon removal?

You don't have to routinely replace any other wiring on a car/truck, what makes spark plug wires any different besides the high voltage (30kV).
Do spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs?
No...but they DO wear out over time. Many times they're damaged by tugging on them...I've busted quite a few this way when they're hard to reach. It's easy to pull the carbon filament (%26quot;the wire%26quot;) off the metal terminal (the part that snaps onto the plug.) The heat and leaking oil can wear them out as well.

I own a bunch of older cars and replace them only if I bust them or if they get to be about 100,000 miles on them. I recently bought a 1993 Buick with 190,000 miles on it. It ran a little rough (no surprise) and when I went to change the plugs, I found that one of the plug wires was completely worn through...and that the wires were the original ones installed when the car was built.

A set of plug wires for most domestic cars costs only about $20-30.00...so it's not big deal replacing them. (I have a neighbor though, who spent over $200.00 on plug wires for his Benz! That's more than I paid for most of my cars!)
Do spark plug wires really need to be replaced every time I change the spark plugs?
No they dont need to be changed everytime you change the spark plugs. I change mine every 50K miles..... Most wires will last the lifetime of your car. I had a burnt one so I changed the whole set.
As long as the Ht leads are in good condition then they dont need to be replaced. only replace them if they are falling apart or are melted :)
it depends on how many miles are on wires i like to replace mine about 50,000 miles because they go through drying out because of the heat through the wires and engine heat and when you replace them put a little grease on the spark plug before you put the wire on this will help next time you change your plugs
No not everytime, However, if you are doing it yourself, might as well change them out every other set of plugs at 40,000 mile intervals or as needed.

Alot of repair shops will tell you to change them, and they will charge you another hour's labor to do it. Instead of the 20 bucks for wires, it will normally cost you 30 bucks for wires and 50 for labor.

So best thing is learn to change them yourself and save some money.
no not every time about once every two years or so
They do break down over time, but as a general rule, they normally need replacing around every 60k miles depending on the particular car. Look at your cars service handbook and it'll say when you should be doing it.
I think yes or you are just throwing your $ away on plugs. They %26quot;burn up %26quot; on the inside. I just went thru all this with my car. IT's worth it to change them...and cheap.
So long as they don't show any damage the answer is no!!

Due to heat, electricity, moisture and sometimes oil in the engine bay the plug wires do breakdown over time. They will normally last atleast 60000-80000 miles.

To remove the boot from the sparkplug, grip the boot and twist it back and forth on the sparkplug to loosen it first.

Always pull the boot, never the wire when removing it from the sparkplug.

1995 Dodge Neon that won't start after changing spark plugs....?

Today I changed the spark plugs on my 95 Neon. When I pulled the first plug, the plug well was full of oil. I cleaned it up and installed the new plug. 2 of the other plugs were the same way. I tried to start after changing plugs, it just wont't run. I have new plug wires on it, and am getting good spark from the Dist. Mod. I have pulled the plugs back out several times and cleaned them off. They had unburned fuel on them and a little oil. HELP PLEASE!!!!!!
1995 Dodge Neon that won't start after changing spark plugs....?
the seals at teh top of the spark tubes on the valve cover are leaking. the oil leaks down from the top all over the plug wires. when you removed the plugs all the oil fell down into the combustion chambers and is fouling the plugs. you should replace the valve cover gasket and spark tube selas so you don't ruin your new wires. clean teh plugs off again, and retry to start it. if it won't go you can give it some throttle. you may have to go wide open to put it into clear flood mode, and let off when it starts.

it shouldn't take all that much to get it started, but it depends on how much you cranked on it before. the more you cranked on it the more flooded it got. if it still won't start, you might pull the plugs back out and let it dry out over night.
1995 Dodge Neon that won't start after changing spark plugs....?
are the wires tight on the spark plugs and do you have spark under compression?
Oil on your plugs like that is not a good sign for your engine but I dont think thats your problem. Did you change the plugs one at a time? It sounds to me like you may have crossed some plug wires. If so you will need to find the order that they go in (it will most likely not go 1,2,3,4). After getting the wires in correct firing order you should be good to go. Also, did you gap the plugs? That should not make it not start unless they are way off but you should be sure they are at the right gap.

How do i change my number 5 spark plug?? 2002 chevy Malibu?

I was told that my number 5 spark plug is misfiring and needs to be changed.. What plug is the number five and what's involved with changing it?
How do i change my number 5 spark plug?? 2002 chevy Malibu?
You would be better off just changing them all 6. If one is fouled for some reason, then they all probably need it.
How do i change my number 5 spark plug?? 2002 chevy Malibu?
Your problem just MIGHT be due to a leaking intake manifold gasket. The coolant may be getting sucked right into the #5 cylinder and interfering with proper firing. Check your coolant level. Also, read the %26quot;GM Litigation%26quot; web-sites. In other word, you need to find out WHY #5 is misfiring. This MIGHT be a warranty issue. Call a GM dealer AFTER you have read the %26quot;GM Litigation%26quot; stuff. Or, contact NHTSA!

  • Changing spark plugs in a 1997 ford E350, should i change them all? they are hard to get to!?

i just changed 2 bad plugs and i dont want to change any more than i have to seeing as this van is a pain in the a** to work on. would it be okay or should i go and change the other 8 plugs?

    Thanks
Changing spark plugs in a 1997 ford E350, should i change them all? they are hard to get to!?
Some plugs are harder to reach than others, but change them all. I also advise changing the coil boots as they frequently go bad about the same time as the plugs. Only change one at a time, and make sure to blow all the dirt and rocks out of the hole or they will end up in the cylinder when you remove the plug, and any rocks in the hole will get wedged beside the plug when you try to push the socket on the plug. tighten 7 to 14 ft. lb. and gap is .054 in.

And be happy that it ain't a 460.
Changing spark plugs in a 1997 ford E350, should i change them all? they are hard to get to!?
if 2 are bad the others are also
I'd quit while I was ahead if the van runs ok now. Wait and see if you have a problem, and then have them changed if necessary. The plugs should last at least 100,000 miles normally and probably longer if they're platinum tipped long life plugs. However, if you have an ignition misfire, I would change as many spark plug wires as I could. I'm afraid if you try to get to the hard to change plugs you may damage the plug wires in the process or cross thread a plug for example.
how did you know that those two were the bad ones? change them all if one is bad they all are going bad Change your distruber cap while you are at it. just do not get the wires out of order
You never change just the %26quot;bad plugs%26quot;... that's like changing one bad tire.

Get the right tools... a %26quot;universal%26quot; adapter will allow you to unscrew the plug at an angle. Does this van have inside access?
REMOVE THE DOG HOUSE AND THE PLUGS ARE RIGHT THERE,THEY ARE NOT HARD ITS JUST THE REMOVAL OF THE HOUSE THATS DIFFICULT.

How do i change the spark plug wires on a pontiac sunfire?

i drive a 2.2 L 1997 pontiac sunfire. how do i cahnge the spark plug wires. i know where they start and where they end i just can't get to the coils. how can i cahnge them?
How do i change the spark plug wires on a pontiac sunfire?
Since the coils are located on the backside of the engine, they're very difficult to reach. (but obviously, you already know that) Make sure the engine is cool before you start so you won't get burned. I have a 1997 Cavalier with the 2.2L which is essentially the same car. When I changed my plug wires, I had to reach down between where the power steering pump and the A/C receiver/dryer is. There's very little room and I pretty much had to do everything by feel because you can't see down where you're sticking your arm. Change each individual plug wire one at a time so you won't accidently get them hooked up wrong or crossed. Take your time and be patient...it won't be easy. I'm a big guy and my forearms are big so it was difficult for me to get my arm into that small space. It'll be easier for someone with thinner forearms. From what I can tell, that's the ONLY access to the coil. You can't even reach it from the underside.

    Good luck!

Unless they're damaged, they should not need to be changed.

Oil on spark plug therads for an 2000 camry with 180757 miles on it what needs to be replaced and is it $$$$?

Changing spark plugs today along with oil and other items to get car ready for emissions check and found oil on threads for cylinder number 3 and 4 all spark plugs however were excessively black but it had been a while since they been changed. What could it be is my dd and need it back on the road?
Oil on spark plug therads for an 2000 camry with 180757 miles on it what needs to be replaced and is it $$$$?
If the car's not smoking, not leaking, and you don't need to add a lot of oil between changes, and especially if it passes the emissions check, then it sounds good to keep driving it, maybe check the spark plugs more often. It could be the start of bad piston rings or bad valves, but with no other symptoms and if it still runs great, no big deal yet.

If it does have other problems, smoke, leaks, runs rough, no power, bad gas mileage... then it's a pretty big repair bill (rings or valves, probably change lots of stuff while they're doing the work, timing chain/belt, head gasket and water pump too, anything with cheap parts but huge labor do at the same time while it's apart)
Oil on spark plug therads for an 2000 camry with 180757 miles on it what needs to be replaced and is it $$$$?
Well is the car burring oil/?? if so then that the oil by passing the rings of the piston..

Or you have a leaking valve cover...
You have worn valve seals which means your engine is burning oil. Notice the amount of oil between oil changes. Do you have to add oil? If not then this will happen very soon. You must remove the cylinder head to replace the valve seals.
get a smoged with new spark plugs and then sell it if u dont

want to spend money puting new value seals or gasket

and something newer will less miles
If the tips of the plugs look OK and there is fresh oil on the threads the oil is leaking past the tubes that house the plugs where they screw into the head. They need to be unscrewed and resealed and minor job.

How do i change spark plug heads?

i have a 2002 dodge neon and i think i have to change the spark plugs because its starting too slow but i have no idea it i even can or where to buy them. help?
How do i change spark plug heads?
The entire spark plug must be changed. Any auto parts store will have the *factory installed OEM (Original Equipment Manufactures) recommended plugs for your car. At the same time order a set of replacement MSD spark plugs cables from:autopartswarehouse.com. The center core electrical conductor and outer insulation begins to degrade very rapidly after five years of use.
How do i change spark plug heads?
no such thing as spark plug heads...u got plugs...and they screw into the heads...its easy...go to pepboys
any parts store will sell you spark plugs. all you do is take 1 plug wire off at a time, get a plug socket, a ratchet and maybe an extension. put the socket on the plug and turn it to the left to loosen it and to the right to put them in.

Is the wrench spark-plug socket different from other wrench sockets heads?

Does spark-plug socket for socket wrench looks different from the one used in changing oil in a car?

I have a set of socket wrench with a bunch of sockets and I need to change the spark plug on my lawn mower. none of my sockets fit on it.. is there a special socket with a different front on it??
Is the wrench spark-plug socket different from other wrench sockets heads?
a %26quot;sparkplug%26quot; socket has a rubber sleeve insert in it to help avoid cracking the porcelin insulator of the plug. most times if careful you can use a regular deep 6 pt socket size 5/8, 3/4, 13/16 depending on plug
Is the wrench spark-plug socket different from other wrench sockets heads?
look for a 6 point deep well (longer) socket.
Usually it's a deep socket with some rubber in it to protect the porcelain. Other than that, it's just a regular socket.
A spark plug removal and replacement socket has to be elongated to be able to fit down over the upper insulated spark plug wire connection. The socket size for fitting over the metal hex shoulder of the plug nearest to the engine head is graduated in millimeters, and the fit between the spark plug metal hex shoulder and the socket of the removal wrench tool should match perfectly.
The answers are good! Also, the spark plug socket may have a place on top whereby you can use a wrench, instead of a ratchet, because many places on the car have no clearance space for a proper removal ratchet wrench!
HHmmm......You know, I've changed my spark plugs on my dad's cars since I was 12 and mine own cars since I was 16 and I've never even thought of why there was a place to put a wrench on the spark plug sockets. I've always used swivel extensions to get to the hard to reach spark plugs. Learn something new every day. But everyone is right. The rubber bushing inside of a %26quot;spark plug socket%26quot; just helps to hold the spark plug in the socket while you start it with your fingers, then use the socket to continue screwing it into the engine block.

also make sure the you don't need to replace your spark plug cap also. They are very cheap and easily to replace.

Remove the seat, and you should be able to see the spark plug cap. Remove the cap. You will need a spark plug remover. You can purchase one from a Auto Part store. However, there are several sizes. Now, you may have a large tool set that already have one.

You can also go to a service station and ask if a mechanic can take it out for you. (safer if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself).

When replacing a Spark Plug, make sure that the gap is adjusted and also make sure that you are replacing it with the right Spark Plug.

    Hope this was helpful,

Can anyone tell me where the spark plug is on Roketa MC-17-50 50cc scooter I looked the whole scooter over?

I am wanting to change spark plug cant find it on Roketa MC-17-50 50cc scooter I looked the whole scooter must be hiden well you help will be appricated
Can anyone tell me where the spark plug is on Roketa MC-17-50 50cc scooter I looked the whole scooter over?
No need to look all over the scooter: it can only be on the cylinder head. Surely that cannot be hidden, just follow the exhasut pipe to it's beginning: in a 4-stroke such as your moped, that is the cylinder head. The spark plug will be in that vicinity, at the end of a thick spark plug cable. At the cylinder-head end of the spark plug cable is the spark plug cap. Pull gently on this and the spark plug will be revealed. Takes less time to do it than it does to write this.

Why are you wanting to change your spark plug ? in a 4-stroke spark plugs last a long time. If you must change it, don't bother with the chinese original. Get a good quality Japanese plug. Make sure to set the gap correctly and do not over-tighten it: hand tight plus a halt turn is enough.

  • How often should i change the spark plug?

my bike runs for less than 100 kms per month. So is it OK to replace its spark plug once in 2 years?
How often should i change the spark plug?
As long as the carb is jetted good and your not burning oil a plug should last 2or3 years. Clean them every spring.
How often should i change the spark plug?
It should be, but depending on the bike and the amount you are riding it (4ks a day perhaps), you will need to check the gap and that it is clean regularly (at least every two months I would suggest) 鈥?especially a 2-stroke.
At that rate you could go 20 years without changing the plug.
I would say thats OK,.... if someone rides like I do (15K+ miles/yr) then every spring new plugs go in...

I am having trouble changing the spark plugs on my 2001 ford explorer. Any ideas?
Rubber Tube? Sounds like you pulled your spark plug wire right out of the boot? The rubber boot should of come off with the wire. If it pulled out of the wire, then you will need to replaced the ignition wires.
I am having trouble changing the spark plugs on my 2001 ford explorer. Any ideas?
once you have pulled the spark plug wire(the right angle boot should stay attached) there will be nothing left between your socket and the plug.
The easiest way to remove the plug wires on that vehicle is with long needle nose pliers that have a 90 degree angle at the end, which closes into a circle shape. Use those needle nose to squeeze as low as possible on the boot around the spark plug and wiggle it as you pull the wire off the spark plug. If you pulled the wire out of the boot and the boot is still on the spark plug, it is too late to be careful now, unless you are handy with repairing a broken plug wire. I would recommend the wires if you damaged them.
the girl is right the guys are dumbasses you ****** up like she said and you need to replace your spark plug wires but........but listen carfully if you havnt already done this your car will have a sertain fireing order do not i repeat do not take them all off at once plez dont you'll make it worse for yourself........ok your looking at your engine from the front start on the right bank go from back to front and then there well be one wire going from the center of the distributer to a coil that should be easy oh and dont strip your heads when putting the plugs in then your ******

    Spark plug changing help?

i bought 4 new spark plugs to do, i was able to gap and replace the two easy to reach ones, but than had to give my brother a ride to the doctor, i noticed while i was coming home the car started acting funny, when id reach a light, the car started to get jumpy. like a baby kicking in a mothers womb sensation, almost like the engine was all jumpy. . than id accelerate and the car would give an almost stalling sensations, and it started to make loud shitty exhaust noise. id keep the pedal down but it wasnt smooth, it would start to accelerate than miss, than pick up and miss...so on and so on. i got home and checked that all connections were secure, i pulled one of the new plugs back out to have a look, and there was dirt on the tip, by now im swearing and hoping that i just rubbed the tip on a dirty part on the way up and that it isnt inside the combustion chamber. would these problems be more likely to be caused by 2 new and 2 old plugs, or dirt that found its way into the chamber?
    Spark plug changing help?
It sounds more like you crossed the plug wires. Check to make sure they are on the correct plugs.
    Spark plug changing help?
It sounds like one of the new plug gaps was simply bridged by some debris of sorts and this would result in a dead skip. Finish checking and gapping the plugs and reinstall them along with the other two news ones and you should be good to go.
Those problems sound like you got dirt on the plugs on the way to putting them in. Dirt in the combustion chamber would be long gone by now. Those problems would also be caused if you got the wires to the plugs switched. Also do you intend to change the wires because you probably should, they wear out from moisture and oil.
no sir, the reason maybe that your old plugs were old and fouled therefore there was a weak spark and your fuel injectors needed to send more gas to make a %26quot;bigger boom%26quot; in the chamber due to lack of spark, (this is why you have a computerized fuel injection) and having such a bad fuel/air/combustion ratio your internals was getting gunked up, and (this leads to loss of power and excessive fuel consumption) but when u changed your sparks you now have that strong spark again, but your (ecu) takes a little time to recognize changes, so its still sending extra fuel to a now perfect strong spark is happening, so its makes your engine tumble, and about the dirt, it is from your piston/chamber but its only %26quot;cleaning out%26quot; the old gunk because of a bad air/fuel ratio, just have to keep revving and driving, it will go away ;), now your service engine soon might pop up, but it will also go away until it cycles out the old gunk and give time to reset the values in the computer, this will all happen automatically and soon.

Changing spark plugs in a Chevy Van?

I have a 1993 G20 Conversion Van and wanted to know the easiest way to change my plugs. I've swapped them out in cars before but never my van. As of right now I'm still running off the original ones with 96,000 miles. Is the best way to take of the hump (doghouse) from inside the van and access them through there? Any help would be appreciated.

Also, when putting the new ones in should I go for the AC Delco Rapidfire plugs? Will this give me anymore power or better mileage?
Changing spark plugs in a Chevy Van?
you have to take the dog house off, as you cant get to them from the fender well ( tried it, it don't work )

this one is easy and its not hard to get the dog house off one clip on each side of the dog house and two bolts at the bottom just below the storage box on the dog house, after that its one of the easiest ones to change plugs and wires, cap and rotor there is to do.

as for the rapid-fire plugs, i cant say anything bad about ac delco plugs as they are some of the best out there, but there are plugs that are just as good at half the cost, just use a good plug, and as long as you stay away from champion spark plugs you'll be OK, as they no longer mark what ones are made here in the USA or the ones made in japan, and the ones from japan are junk...
Changing spark plugs in a Chevy Van?
i think the easist way is to jack the front end up and go thru the fenderwell
had many g rides and the best way is from the doghouse with a swivel head ratchet and you may want a 1 inch extension on some. to reinstall use a piece of fuel line pushed onto the top of the plug to get it started. stay with ac delco and you might want to go platinum
I owned a 1990 Chev C20 van conversion and I found it easier to remove the inside engine cover, that way you have easy access to the plugs, wires and distributor. Also you can listen to the stereo while doing the work.

How do i change spark plug wires in a 2000 bonneville 3800 series II v6 engine?

How do i change spark plug wires in a 2000 bonneville 3800 series II v6 engine?
Take the top engine cover off so you can see all of the spark plug wires, One at a time, twist and pull wire boot and metal cover off spark plug, Match up the old wire with the new one the same length. Slide the metal cover off the old one and on the new one.(It is a heat shield to protect the boot.) If the boot breaks off on the spark plug, you might need a pair of needle nose pliers to get the rest off. replace 1 wire at a time so you do not change the firing order. Try to twist the spark plug boots 180 degrees before you pull, it will help them pop off easier. Them make sure you securely push the new boot onto the spark plug, you should feel a little pop or snap as the metal sleeve inside the boot slides over the end of the spark plug

I hope that give you an idea how to do it and good luck.

Will changing my spark plugs give me more performance?

I have a 2003 Grand Marquis and will going to a split fire or quad fire plug be benificail for me?
Will changing my spark plugs give me more performance?
No. The best plugs are those recommended by the manufacturer. None of the claims made by these aftermarket plugs live up to the hype.
Will changing my spark plugs give me more performance?
Not necessarily, a plug is a plug, you will notice a minimal difference. Now if your plugs are going bad or are close to burning out then getting a new one will definitely have a noticeable difference in performance, for instance you will notice that it wont be %26quot;bogged down%26quot; as much. hope this helps
Dude i threw a set of split fires in my dodge ram and gained 3mpg and i could chirp the tires going into third gear. ive never been able to do that with stock plugs.
If your current plugs are going bad, replacing them will help. Changing the TYPE of plug is more likely to CAUSE problems than solve them.
changing them would,nt hurt nothing but just stick with what the factory recommends.

    Firing order 1-6-5-4-3-2 -----

Yep, I agree with the previous answer...

Looking at my 2004 Grand Prix Owners Manual, here it is:

    The firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2

    for both the 3800 V6 231 CID (3.8L L26) and the

    3800 V6 supercharged 231 CID (3.8L L32)

The spark plug gap is the same for both engines:

    .060 inch (1.52mm)

How can I change the spark plug in a baja sc50 motor scooter?

My baja scooter won't run. I checked the battery, and it is good. Now I want to rule out a bad spark plug. Any ideas on where it is located? The owner manual is no help.

There is a panel under the rubber floor mat. pullit up ,you should see a panel held down with a couple of screwws remove them and you should be able to see the spark plug wire .I think you can take it from there.

it was running fine until the day the spark plugs and ignition wires were changed now the little car wont even turn over sometimes there is a click and the lights on the dash come on but not every time. the firing order was checked to be sure things were correct and still nothing. The fan comes on the car still has yet to start or even crank like it wants to start.

Sounds like bad wiring to me. Take it back to whoever changed it.

If it is clicking then it could be your starter.
    Charge the battery.

Change Spark plug on my atv?

I bought an oil changing kit for my atv (Polaris sportsman 500) and I took out the old spark plug which said (5E) and I replaced it with a new one that was a little bigger and said (6E) on it..is this ok?
Change Spark plug on my atv?
Odd that a spark plug would be in an oil change kit. When you say it was bigger. Bigger how? longer? If so it may cause piston damage. Did the dealer supply this or did you just buy it on a hunch with out knowing what you needed? Still not understanding the different size bit. Did you measure it? or are you just making an assumption based on the numbering, which is quite a different matter all together. Was the complete number something like NGKBKR6E?

Larger number usually means it's a hotter plug, spark wise. Little less of a chance of fouling out, too hot could burn your piston though.
did it screw in its ok

I have a 1999 ford contour my engine light came on but I have change the spark plug went off then same back on?

I have change the wire for the spark plug the engine light still on.
I have a 1999 ford contour my engine light came on but I have change the spark plug went off then same back on?
And why did you change the spark plug wire?

The Check Engine Light can be set off by literally 1,000 different things.

You addressed one of them, and I'm going to guess you didn't even bother to have the code read, to see if there was any reason to do what you did.

Since it didn't fix the problem....it would appear that it had nothing to do with spark plugs.
I have a 1999 ford contour my engine light came on but I have change the spark plug went off then same back on?
Did you have it diagnosed? Were plugs and wires the fault?

Engine lights usually come on due to emissions faults. Have it diagnosed and you'll save money in the long run!

    Good Luck!
Take the vehicle to autozone or another car parts place and ask them to check the code on the engine light. They should be able to tell you why the light came on.
