When checking. Make sure the plug is touching the metal frame as will need path for spark to travel to ground of mower. hope this helps

Remove the plug and reconnect the wire. Lay it off to the side in a darkened area and pull the starter cord. You should be able to see the spark if it is good. Do not hold the plug in your hand, unless you want to feel the power.
You look real hard!
It is not easy to see a spark when trying to test on the weed-eater directly. Though you could used the walk-behind mower to test the sparkplug. You need to be safe from an electric shock. 20,000 volts hurts! Look carefully at the plug for any hairline cracks. If you find any then scrap the sparkplug.

Put the plug on the lawn mower's lead and have someone else pull the starter for you. You need to take out the lawn mower's plug first, just to make pulling the lead easy as there is no compression when you pull the lead. Using a heavy rubber implement, hold the sparkplug against the mower's cylinder-head. Have your partner pull on the starter rope and watch for a fat blue spark at the sparkplug. If the spark is orange or yellow, the plug is either faulty or you have a problem with the mower. If the mower works okay, then the sparkplug needs changing.

Now for the weedeater. The carburetor is suspect. You need t clean the carburetor by dipping it in acetone. Get thius from the chemist. This will clean anything (not as good as carbontetracloride, but you can't get 'carbontet'' any more, but aceone is the next best thing. Leave it for 24 hours and wash out with fresh gas and happy weedeating.
